When people say a certain someone is “beautiful”, most of the time they are referring to their appearance, about how attractive they are, how their facial features stand out, or even the clothes they are wearing. However, the true meaning of a “beautiful person” is what he/she has on the inside. A very attractive person can have a cruel heart, and they definitely do not deserve to be called “beautiful”. To be beautiful, one must possess some traits that would remain with them for as long as their life, unlike appearance that doesn’t last forever. Here are some traits if you have to improve yourself and be a more beautiful person.
1. Be courageous.
Having courage is not something everyone has, but anyone can make themselves more courageous. This isn’t just about being brave enough to do risky things, such as skydiving, instead, it is more about being brave to take the steps out of your comfort zone to achieve your dreams. It is all the failures you encounter, the opportunities you grab on to, the new knowledge you grasp on, those are the things that will truly show how courageous and beautiful you are.
2. Be honest.
We all had lied to someone at some point in our lives, and many of us started lying when we were very little as well. Sure, there are some situations where we have to lie to others in order to not hurt their feelings, but there are also things that you need to tell the truth for good, regardless of how hurtful they are to others. This also applies to yourself. Being honest with oneself can be as easy as it can be difficult. There are many times people are in denial of their feelings they ended up treating themselves horribly. Overall, this doesn’t mean you should stop lying, but rather know when to say the truth.
3. Be smart.
It takes a lot of hard work and time for people to be smart, or at least in exams. But when you graduated and head out to society and start living as an adult, being smart seems very different from when you are in school. There are a lot of things school doesn’t teach you about being an adult, and that can be challenging at first. To be smart is knowing how to maintain great relationships with people, and having emotional balance, and also making the right decisions and so much more. In order to be smart, you need to expose yourself more to the real world, step out of your comfort zone, do what is right.
4. Be grateful.
We all probably had taken for granted many things in our lives, and this is normal. We, humans, are selfish and we are always wanting more than what we have. When we have a bike, we want a car. When we have a car, we want a nicer car. And when we have a nicer car, we want a luxurious car. Though this feeling of greediness is inevitable, we can train ourselves to be grateful for the things we have. Try to focus on the things that you own rather than focusing on things that you want. If you understand how owning someone is more satisfying than wanting something better, then your life can be made much better.
5. Be self-loving.
We all focus too much on the negative aspects of our lives, such as our failures, what we do not have, and so on, that are hurting our emotions without realizing. Sure, living in our society, trying to love ourselves can be difficult. Others can just beat you down by simple adjectives, or by comparing you with someone else. Sure, we cannot stop others from saying what they want, but what we can do is block out their words and focus on what we love about ourselves. If you learn to love yourself, others will automatically be attracted to you.
6. Be open-minded.
Being open-minded is such a beautiful trait anyone can have, but it is also difficult to achieve if you only focus on the downsides of life. Try to change your perspective on life for good, and your life would be made easier in the future. If you have a bad hair day, focus on other parts of yourself, say your outfit for the day can be great. It is your choice to look at the bright side of things in life instead of the dark side. It will take time to change your thinking, but when you achieve that ability naturally, you will be a brand new better person.
7. Be considerate.
If you are a person who always wants things your way, chances are you might’ve offended many people in your lives. But sometimes, letting people do the decisions will make you feel better, and it might even have a better result in the end. We are not children forever, no one will let us do things the way we want forever. As we grow up, we need to learn to accept what others want and compromise. Sure, it might make you feel sour at first, as we all have an ego, but a few years from now when you look back, you’ll realize compromising is defintiely the better choice.
8. Be respectful.
Ever since money and job separate us humans, into different categories, we seem to treat people differently. But the truth is, we are all humans, and we all deserve the same kind of treatment, nonetheless if you’re treating your teacher, the janitor, a wealthy business, or a garbage collector, they all deserved to be respect. The simplest way to do so is to say thank you to everyone around you. It might not seem much, but a “thank you” can be so powerful it might change someone’s day.
9. Be tidy.
People say being messy means you’re creative, but that doesn’t mean being tidy doesn’t have its own benefits. In fact, being a tidy person means you take your life more seriously, and that makes you are endearing. A tidy person doesn’t just mean you live in a house where everything is neatly placed and everything is clean as if they are new. Having planned out your future is a form of tidiness as well, as it signifies how prepared you are for life. Sure, there will be unforeseen obstacles, but having a plan at least means you are worried about your life, and you’ve matured.
10. Be hygienic.
First impressions are formed not just by the way you look, but also by how clean you look. You can be very attractive and have great facial features, but you might be wearing dirty clothes that smelled, or your hair is uncombed and messy, or your mouth does not smell pleasant. It is not just about the first impression, but also your relationships with people in the long term. Staying hygienic also signifies that you do care about your appearance in basic terms and that you are more mature.
11. Be encouraging.
There are people who are afraid of being defeated and seeing others having achievements in their life, and with that, they do not congratulate others when they had achieved something, or they do not give encouragement to those who need it. Having a beautiful heart is not about competition, but lifting others up while you are raising yourself as well. Don’t try to compare yourself with the achievement of others. Instead, try to focus on your own, while still giving others the motivation.
12. Be disciplined.
We all have disciplines we live by, but they are often affected by how society sees us or how we want others to see. We give up on our disciplines, and we follow others just because we are afraid of getting judged for being different, and this makes us behave like bandwagons. There is a saying about only the only person you should be comparing with is yourself. So stop trying to live by other disciplines. They have their right to do whatever they want, and so do you. Have your own principles and live to be the best version of yourself, don’t let others say what you can or can’t do.
13. Be confident.
Confidence is perhaps the best makeup you can put on. Don’t let others' words or stare give you the idea that you shouldn’t wear something, or you words you shouldn’t say. Their words are inevitable, as it is their mouth, they can say whatever they want. The most important thing is if you let it get to you or not. Do things that you feel confident doing, or say things that make you feel powerful. Live your life proudly and that you own it.
14. Be yourself.
To be what you want to be can be difficult, especially living in our society where we can only wear certain clothing for us to be “normal” or girls need to be soft-spoken and sweet or else we’ll be unattractive. But who’s to say what we can do or whatnot. As long as we feel comfortable in what we say or do, what does it matter anyway? How great would it be if we all just live however we want without people judging us with harsh words or through silent stares?
15. Be happy.
A smile can bring a lot of meaning to oneself. To be happy isn’t just about smiling and laughing all day, but how you feel about living the life you are in. If you are unhappy with your life, chances are not many people would feel like you’re an endearing person. Sure, we all have days that we don’t feel exactly happy, perhaps about someone we love, or something we truly care about, but the key is to find the silver lining. Don’t let anyone or anything prevent you from being happy. If there is such a person or a thing, get them out of your life. They do not deserve to be around you.
A beautiful person is not just about looking physically great, but what matters the most are the things hidden in your heart. You can try to improve your appearance and be as attractive as you can, but never forget to be a person with traits that attract others from the heart. Being beautiful isn’t an overnight miracle. Make the traits mentioned above a habit, and you’ll progress into a beautiful person.
“She was beautiful, but not like those girls in the magazines.
She was beautiful, for the what she thought.
She was beautiful, for the sparkle in her eyes when she talked about something she loved.
She was beautiful, for her ability to make other people smile, even if she was sad.
No, she wasn’t beautiful for something as temporary as her looks.
She was beautiful, deep down to her soul. She is beautiful.”
– F. Scott Fitzgerald.
