It is always good to know how to pack smart especially when going on a vacation overseas. You cannot return to your house whenever you want to get something you had forgotten, and the price for check-in baggage is not cheap too. The ideal way of packing is to pack minimal pieces that are versatile as well. If you are planning to go on a vacation any time soon, or just for your future references, here are 22 tips for smart traveling when going on an overseas vacation!
Carry On
1. Bring a set of spare clothes.
This is for those kinds of “just in case” situations, where you accidentally stain your clothes or something worse, and you need to change into a new set of clothing. You don’t really need any fancy clothing for this situation, just something that is basic will do, like a T-shirt and jeans.
2. Bring your toothbrush and toothpaste.
Bringing a set of toothbrush and toothpaste is not just something that is useful for when your flight is during midnight and you will arrive at your destination in the morning. It is also useful for when you feel like your breath is not pleasant and need to freshen it up.
3. Keep all your electronics’ cables in a pouch.
Leaving cables all over in your carry on is a nightmare. They get tangled among themselves, or worse with other cables, and the worst of all? Breaking a wire. So, a good way to store the cables is to tie them properly, in a way that they don’t break, and keep all of them separated in a pouch.
4. Wear bulkier clothing on the plane.
This is a good way to help save space in your suitcase so that you are able to pack more stuff in your suitcase. Aside from that, you will be able to keep yourself warm in the airplane as well as it is almost always cold being on the plane.
5. Prepare your travel documents ahead of time.
A good way to make sure all documents are prepared is to write them down on a list, and this should include your airline ticket (if you booked online), your visa (if necessary), your passport, or any other kinds of documents. They should all be kept in a file together and not thrown your carry on unprotected.
6. Pack adapter converter.
It is important to check how the plugs look like when traveling overseas as the plugs will be different. The last thing you want when traveling overseas is if your phone ran out of battery and you do not have a suitable plug to charge your phone. Below is a list of different plugs and which country they belong to.
Check-in Suitcase
1. Roll your clothes instead of folding them.
You might hear others saying that rolling your clothes when packing your suitcase will save space, well, that is true. A smart way to pack your suitcase is to save space so that you can pack more stuff. As clothes usually take up quite a lot of space, rolling them will help definitely be helpful.
2. Keep your jewelry properly.
Jewelry is just as much of a nightmare as electronic cables, it is important to store them properly as well. For smaller jewelry, such as earrings and rings, you can store them in a medicine case. Whereas for longer ones, such as necklaces and bracelets, wrapping them in plastic wraps would do the trick.
3. Keep your liquid products in zip lock bags.
Having your liquid spilled out of their bottles and onto your suitcase during a plane ride is horrible. As accidents could happen the least you expect it, just make sure they are kept in zip lock bags to prevent them from leaking onto your suitcase.
4. Use a plastic sheet to cover the cap of liquid items.
An even safer way to ensure your liquids don’t leak is to cover the cap of your liquid products with a plastic sheet. This way it is impossible for the liquid inside to spill out as the plastic sheet will kind of stick itself onto the cap and the bottle and making your liquid items more secure.
5. Keep your shoes in shower caps that you don’t want.
Shower caps make packing shoes so much easier. Simply place the bottom part of your shoes into the shower cap and leave the top open. This will prevent your clothes or any other items from getting dirty from the bottom of the shoes.
6. Roll your socks and stuff them into your shoes.
As shoes and socks are to be worn together, it’s just suitable for you to store your socks in your shoes. This does not only help save space in your suitcase, but it also helps to keep your shoes in shape and not squashed and deformed by the time you get off the plane.
7. Transfer large bottles of skincare products into smaller containers.
Your skincare products are not only big in size, which takes up quite a lot of space, but it could also even be wasteful just in case they spill in your suitcase. Transferring them into smaller containers will help you save space, and will also create a smaller mess if accidents happen.
8. Put cotton pads into powdered makeup products.
Ever bring powdered makeup products on an airplane to find out the product break into pieces after getting out of the plane? Well, a way to prevent this is simply to place a piece of a cotton pad on top of the product and close them well, and then pack them away. This is an excellent method to keep the product in a good condition from breaking.
9. Use binder clips on the razor's blade.
Most razors probably don’t come with a cover to keep the blade part closed. So a good way to do that is to use a large binder clip and clip it onto the blade of the razor, that way your razor can be kept safe in your suitcase.
10. Bring basic clothing for easy pairing.
Unless you are traveling overseas for some event or meeting, or else packing just basic clothing that is easy for pairing would do. It is okay to bring one or two fancier pieces of clothing, but aside from that, keeping things simple will make your vacation life a breeze.
11. Maintain the shape of your hat by stuffing things in them.
If you are going to beaches or somewhere hot, it is a must to bring a hat, right. But ever experience your hat getting squashed and out of shape? Well, a smart way to keep it in a good shape pack your hat upside down, and stuff things into the cup part, such as your undergarments, clothes, or any other softer items.
12. Bring extra plastic bags to store your dirty clothes.
You definitely do not want to combine your dirty and clean clothes together, so keeping your used ones in a plastic bag will help maintain your clean clothing fresh and odourless.
13. Plan your outfits ahead of time.
You probably do not want to waste 30 minutes every morning picking out what clothes to wear during a vacation. Prior to the vacation, plan and write down what outfit combination would you wear on each day. This will save you a ton of time staying in the hotel or apartment, and give you more time for your travel.
14. Bring extra bags for souvenirs.
Unless you are bringing an extremely large suitcase, or else you wouldn’t be able to keep all the things you brought during the starting of the vacation AND the souvenirs you bought into your suitcase. To solve this problem, simply bring an extra bag and use it to keep the things you bought, and carry that bag onto the plane.
15. Use packing cubes for organisation.
If you are an organized freak, then this is for you. Packing your tops and bottoms, even undergarments, into packing cubes will not only save space, but they are also super convenient to pack into your suitcase. Instead of dealing with smaller pieces of items, you just have to organize the large packing cubes. Though it takes extra time to pack your clothes into it, it will definitely save you time when stuffing them into your suitcase.
16. Lay easily wrinkled clothes flat on the top in the luggage, avoid folding or rolling.
Blouses, chiffon buttoned shirt, soft pants, or any other items that are prone to wrinkle is tricky. No matter how, they still get wrinkle when you get off the plane, whether it be rolling, folding, packing cubes, and so on. So a good way to ensure minimum wrinkle is by placing them on top of all the items in the suitcase so that not many items will cause them to be wrinkled.
