Wanting to live a healthier life is not something people would call “fun”. The thought of eating salad is definitely not appetising, and thinking about getting up from the couch to go for a run is a huge turn-off, for most people, at least. A possible reason that you associate living healthily with such negative thoughts, despite knowing it is good for you, might be because you are not doing the things you enjoy. Here’s the truth, not everyone will enjoy the same way of living healthily. Someone might love running and eating salad, but for others, this lifestyle is simply torturing. You just need to find your way of living healthy, make it work for you.
1. Do workouts you enjoy.
There is a huge misconception about working out because most people think working out means getting on the treadmill and run for 30 minutes or doing an intense HIIT workout that leaves you huffing and puffing. If you are doing workouts you don’t enjoy, you will only get more demotivated to work out. But the thing is, working out is not just limited to that. There are many workouts to choose from that you should do based on what you enjoy. You can dance, go on a hike, whatever activities that get you moving, so as long as you enjoy them.
2. Recreate healthy versions of unhealthy food.
It is so unfair that unhealthy foods are so delicious, right? You really want that fries but you’re on a diet, how depressing. But that doesn’t mean you have to give up fries forever. You could make your own healthy version of junk food. If you love fries, why not bake your own fries instead of eating the fried stuff in takeouts? The same goes for potato chips that can be baked as well! What about ice cream? You can try making “banana nice cream”. Just search online for healthy recipes and you’ll find tons of ideas to try out. In fact, the healthy versions might be even better than the original ones. Best of all, it could help save money!
3. Know your way of working out.
Different people will enjoy different types of workouts, similarly, the way you do it differs too. What this means is that you don’t have to limit your workout to only being in the gym, or going outside for a run. If you enjoy being in the gym, that’s good for you! If you love outdoors, go on a hike at the nearest hill, or go running outside. If you prefer being indoors, then you can follow along with work out videos online while being in the comfort of your house. If you love working out alone then go running yourself, and if you choose to have a workout buddy, go join some classes together. As long as you are moving it's all that matters.
4. Make working out an exploration.
If you’re someone who loves working out outdoors, then you could try going on a run somewhere new and go explore the places you’ve never been before or did not even think about going before. Treat it as an adventure and go find out new things in the outside world, somewhere away from your comfort zone. Try different paths to run and if you prefer, go with a friend! If you choose to stay home, then explore by trying out different workout routines or try different work out videos online. There are so many free resources to choose from Don’t limit yourself to a few several workouts, constantly be trying new things so you wouldn’t get bored.
5. Find inspiration.
Getting into a healthy lifestyle is not a straight path, it is not a goal you can reach where you will constantly have inspiration and motivation to keep you going. There are ups and downs in the process of it, days where you feel extremely motivated to go for a run, but also days where you just want to lie on the couch, binge-watching TV shows while snacking on all the food in your house. That’s why finding inspiration is really important to keep your energy going. You have to know what works for you. If you love reading inspirational quotes, then read some before working out! If seeing pictures or videos of people working out makes you want to get moving, then go check on it! You have to find ways to keep your thoughts on track to avoid giving up halfway.
6. Have days off.
To adopt a healthy lifestyle does not mean you will stop eating junk food forever. It is knowing when to eat it and how much to eat, it is about being mindful. Once a while, try to take days off. Skip working out for that day, eat some delicious junk food, take the time to enjoy your life, and never feel guilty for doing anything that you feel like you shouldn’t be doing. Restricting yourself is probably the worst that you can do to yourself. One day of an unhealthy lifestyle will not ruin your whole life.
Remember, the path to living a healthy life is not a smooth straight path. There will be ups and downs that you will experience. But the most important thing is that you need to be committed to changing up your lifestyle, and when you are older your body will definitely thank you for that.
