Having clear, smooth and healthy skin is what everyone wants, and with all the commercialized skincare products out there, people will go crazy with them, purchasing the expensive ones or the well-known ones, in hope that it would help them have the beautiful skin they wanted. But what people usually do not realise is that the food in their diet is the main reason why their skin is not the way they want it to be. Just like maintaining a healthy physique, what you consume into your body is more important than what you apply on the outside. If you really want to have better skin, then just watch out for these foods in your diet.

*I am not an expert, a nutritionist, or a dietician of any kind. The information given is all dependent on the researches I had done and is considered to be appropriate to be up on this list.

1. Dairy Products

Dairy products, such as milk, yogurt, cheese, butter, and so on, though are well known to provide calcium for our body, but are bad for your skin. As dairy products are produced by animals, they contain a high level of hormones which will cause inflammation and breaking down of the skin, which causes acne.

2. Sugary Food

Sugary food is not only bad for your waistline, but it is also terrible for your face. As sugar will cause your insulin levels to spike, this would lead to a burst of inflammation throughout your body, which causes your skin to age and sag more, creating more wrinkles. Yet another reason to get rid of candies, cakes, sodas, and all those sugary stuff out of your life.

3. High Sodium Food

Yet another food that will do you no good at all. High sodium food, such as chips, most processed food, fast food, processed meat, and all those, will cause your skin to swell as they tend to retain water. This is why when we cry, our eyes will puff up due to the salt in our tears. As high sodium food will affect the collagen in our skin, it will cause our skin to age as well.

4. Refined Carb Products

It is so unfair that foods that are tasty, such as bread, pasta, cakes and such, always has a bad effect on us. Refined carbs are processed flour that is broken down into sugar, and referring to the 2nd point about “sugary food,” you can tell why it is bad for your skin. Refined carbs will increase the oil production in our skin, which will clog pores, create pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads.

5. Alcohol

Alcohol is terrible for your organs, and if that’s not bad enough, it is also terrible for your skin. It has the ability to dehydrate your skin, and if you over drink it, it will reduce the number of vitamins and nutrients absorbed in your body. One of them would be vitamin A, which is what our skin required to prevent the loss of moisture from the layers.

6. Spicy Food

Although spicy foods are able to increase your metabolism, which makes you feel full faster (thus can aid weight loss), it is not so friendly to your skin. For people with fairer skin, consuming spicy food causes your skin to be inflamed, and will create a blotchy and red layer on your face. Fortunately, this is doesn’t happen to most people, as only people with delicate skin would be affected.

7. Caffeine

Caffeine is found not just solely in coffee, but also in soft drinks and energy drinks, having the same effect as alcohol. Consuming too much caffeine will dehydrate our skin, and without enough water to flush out the harmful bacteria in our skin, it would be a perfect habitat for bacteria to grow, hence causing acne.

8. Fried Food

Fried food is perhaps the worst food of all from this list. They are the reason the obesity rate increase rapidly over the years, they are the main culprit of heart diseases, and they are the worst enemy to your skin. As the oil itself from the food are bad for your body, it will cause poor blood circulation which would cause your skin to age and sag, and also create more acne due to the high contents of fat.

9. Shellfish

Shellfishes are amazing seafood that everyone enjoys, except for those with allergies. Shellfish, such as clams, shrimps, crabs, lobsters, and so on, could be considered a healthy food, but in terms of getting clear skin? Not so much. Shellfish contains a high level of iodine, which would cause your skin to inflame, making them appear blotchy, and would clog your pores, causing acne. So try to avoid having this delicacy too often.

With the list above, you should know how to control what you feed your body if you want to have clear, youthful, beautiful skin!
