9 Things You Do That Are Ruining Your Eyes
As our responsibilities, regardless of jobs or school, gets more important, the less we seem to care about our health. One of the things we neglect the most is our eyes, which is perhaps one of the most important parts of our body. On a daily basis, we do a lot of things that are straining and worsening our eyes without realising, and it is critical to realize these bad habits and change them for good.
1. Using your phone in the dark (or any other devices).
A lot of us have this habit of using our phone when all the lights and turned off, right before we get ready to sleep. It might be because we cannot fall asleep, or it can be the only time we have to catch up on social media. But for whatever reason it is, it is important to know that this habit would not only lead to worsening our eyesight or make us more tired, but it can even cause blindness in the long term! So just be sure you do not use your phone when all the lights are turned out and try to make it a habit.
2. Rubbing your eyes too much.
It is pretty tempting to rub our eyes throughout the day as it is a reflex. Just like when our skin itches, we scratch it. It might make us feel good for a moment, but what we cannot see is how all the dirt and germs that could get in our eyes from our hands, which could lead to eye infection! If your eyes are feeling itchy, just get close your eyes and hold a cold tower over your lids, or simply splash your eyes with water.
3. Using old makeup.
Using makeup that is old, not just expired, does not only leave your beautiful skin in a worse condition, it can also be harmful to your eyes. Since old makeup had been used for a long time, there would be a lot of bacteria and germs stuck to them that you obviously cannot see. If you continue using them, you’ll never know what of that dirt would get into your eyes. It is best to just change up your eye makeup as often as possible, or best if you stop using them at all, which could be difficult for a lot of girls.
4. Not wearing sunglasses when exposed to strong sunlight.
Sunlight, like makeup, is not only terrible for your skin is exposed too much of it, it can be detrimental to your eyes as well. If you are out walking under the 12 pm sun, it is best to have your sunglasses handy to protect your eyes, just like applying sunblock on your skin to protect it. If your eyes are exposed to too much strong sunlight, your eyes could get blurry and your eyesight will worsen, but for more severe cases it might even lead to blindness.
5. Staring at screens for a long period of time.
As technology take up a lot of our daily lives, this might come in a bit of difficulty. Most jobs these days require looking at a computer screen for long hours, and if that isn’t enough, we tend to use our phones when we are out, say for lunch or dinner, and some people even watch TV shows late at night. All these are extremely taxing on your eyes. As this is something evitable, something to do to reduce staring too much at the screen is to take a short break from staring at the screen every 20 minutes. Although it is just a short break, it is better than nothing.
6. Keeping screens too bright.
Keeping our screens, regardless of the computer, phone, or TV, too bright, even in daylight, is similar to looking at your phone at night when you turned out all the lights. It can put your eyes under a lot of stress due to the blue light emitted by our devices. But this doesn’t mean you should put your brightness to a minimum. Just keep it comfortable enough for your eyes that you do not need to squint when using them, and they do not feel like a torchlight shining at you.
7. Looking too close to screens.
As we get older, our eyes get worse in looking at a close distance, thus old people tend to get farsightedness or in the medical term known as “presbyopia.” Although this happens naturally, that doesn’t mean we should speed up the process of getting farsightedness. Looking too close at screens, even books materials can be straining on our eyes. This is not as severe as looking at our phones in the dark, but it can be stressful to our eyes. Just keep a comfortable distance when looking at screens.
8. Sleeping with contact lenses.
There are some days where we are too tired and it might be too late to just head to the bathroom and remove our contacts, we just tell ourselves “it’s just for a day” and we get in bed. Sure, doing it several times might not be that big of a deal, but it is a risk not worth taking. Having contacts on when you sleep will block out the flow of oxygen to your eyes, which might lead to eye infections. There are even cases where contact lenses moving to the back of the eyeball and can only be removed through surgery. Just like makeup, it is crucial to remove your contacts before you sleep, regardless of how exhausted you are.
9. Not getting enough sleep.
This is perhaps the easiest thing you can do to help your eyes, which many do not do. Sleeping is great for our body, our skin, our health, and also, not to forget, our eyes. All you need to do is lie in bed and relax, and your eyes will thank you. Not getting enough sleep would make your eyes feel tired and strained, and they might even dry out your eyes. So just do the easiest thing you can to protect your eyes, along with your body and your health.
Here are some of the things you need to know about that would damage your eyes. As some of them can be serious, it is important to take note of them and get those bad habits out of your life. Even if your eyes do not feel strained from some of these, it is still crucial to avoid these bad habits, as they would lead to serious trouble in the long term.
