If only all our school or work starts in the afternoon, wouldn’t that be great? We don’t have to dread waking up just every single morning. But unfortunately, life is not fun. For students, they need to wake up early to get to their classes, and when you start working, it’s even worse. You need to wake up even earlier to get through traffic so you wouldn’t be late for work! But here’s a good thing: study shows that waking up early does do your body a great job than waking up later, say in the afternoon. If you want to start practicing to wake up earlier and feel more refreshed when you do, here are some ways you can do it!
1. Allow natural light to enter your room.
No matter which room you sleep at in your house or dorms or anywhere, there must be a window where lights can pass through into your room. Having natural light makes it less stressful to wake up as supposed to electrical lightings. This is because natural light tends to increase in the light intensity gradually so that your eyes and brain can get used to the sunlight, as supposed to electrical light that just gives your brain pressure when you turn it on. To make your room filled with natural light, you do not have to open your curtains all the time, just change them into brighter colors or translucent fabric, instead of using curtains that are darker in color.
2. Go to bed earlier.
This is something many people failed to do but it is so important to your health. With our busy lifestyles nowadays, it is difficult to sleep earlier at night, as there seem to be too many things that need to be done, and by the time we head to bed, it is already very late. Making sleeping early a habit would greatly improve your sleep and also helps you wake up earlier naturally. Aside from that, sleeping early is also excellent for your health, your skin, your brain, and many things that not many people are aware of.
3. Keep your devices far away from your bed.
This serves several purposes. One, having your devices, mostly your phone, would prevent you from using your phone too much before you sleep. Two, if you have your alarm set on your phone, having your phone far away would force you to go up and turn it off in the morning. Three, the radiation radiated by your phone, whether you’re having it charged or not, is detrimental to not only your health but your sleep as well. Just make sure that you keep your phone far away, but close enough that you can hear the alarm in the morning, and you’ll be able to wake up earlier.
4. Have something to look forward to in the morning.
Whether it be something you are enthusiastic about or something you dread, having something that forces you to wake up earlier in the morning to do it would help you wake up earlier. Say if you’re excited to make breakfast every morning, then make it the reason for you to want to wake up early in the morning. On the contrary, perhaps you need to get some school work done, that could also be another reason that force you to wake up earlier.
5. Avoid facing too much blue light before you sleep.
Although smartphones have provided us a huge amount of benefit since its invention, it also comes with a disadvantage: the blue light on the screen is harmful to your eyes and even worse for your sleep. It’s not just our phones, of course. Computer, laptops, televisions, all of these are no any better than phones. Facing too much blue light would interfere with your brain system, making your brain confused about whether you are tired or not. Unfortunately, many times this is inevitable, as we might need to work on our school projects, or some people even need to get their jobs done. However, something you can do is to have at least an hour or two before sleep without facing any of your devices.
6. Drink lesser caffeinated drinks.
Caffeinated drinks are not just limited to coffee, but many beverages out there contain caffeine in them, in fact, even more, caffeine, such as energy drinks, soft drinks, and teas too. As caffeine, when it reaches a certain amount, will make you more energetic, that means you wouldn’t feel tired enough to sleep, that’s why it is advisable to not drink caffeinated beverages at night. Being too energetic makes it more difficult to get to sleep, and eventually leads to sleep deprivation
7. Get enough sleep.
In our society, most of the young and middle-aged people became night owls, mostly due to our lifestyles, with our blue light devices, diets, and our jobs, and so on. In fact, some people even find it difficult to sleep earlier, say at 11 pm! The worst part is that we all have to be up early in the morning for our jobs and schools and that only leaves us having 6 hours of sleep. It is important to change up your lifestyle and find ways to make yourself sleep earlier so that you will be able to wake up earlier, better yet naturally.
8. Change up your alarm tone.
Nowadays, most people use their phone’s alarm every day, and they often only ever use that one tone as their alarm. Sure, using the same alarm tone would make you so afraid of that tone, but that is not comparable to another situation: the fact that you can actually sleep through your alarm and wake up late. As our brain is great at adapting to something, as time passes it is not a problem for our brain to not recognize that it is the alarm waking us up in the morning, and ended up sleeping through the entire alarm. It is recommended to change up your alarm tone, perhaps once a month, just so your brain is able to detect changes in the morning and will be more alert to wake up.
9. Be consistent with your waking time.
We all have jobs and schools, and we need to be there at the same time every day. Training yourself to wake up at a certain time every day would make your brain get used to being awake at that certain time, thus making it easier for you to wake up at around the same time every day. Aside from waking up according to time, you can also try to wake up every day just about the time when the sky is starting to brighten up. The key is to make yourself wake up at a certain time or certain brightness.
By implementing these tips in your life, it would be easier for you to start waking up earlier. Although it does take time, and everyone has a different method of creating a habit, it is still achievable. If you are able to wake up early, better yet, naturally, you wouldn’t be late for your school or work, you would be more productive and get more things done, and your body would be much healthier as well!
