When people say working out, they think of running outside for a long duration of time. However, working out can be done almost anywhere. With some creativity and enough space, you can exercise even in your own room. For people who love working out indoors, or for those rainy days, here are some cardio workouts that you can do indoor!

*Disclaimer: I am not an expert in bodybuilding or any health expert, but I believe that these few exercises are great for toning your body and are suitable for people with a generally healthy body and physique. If these exercises are too hard for you or are causing you extreme pain in any way, do not continue working out with them.

1. Kickboxing

Many people don’t know it, but kickboxing is actually a very effective cardio workout. It gets your heart rate elevated, and at the same time, it helps to tone your body, killing two birds with one stone! You can perform this exercise in the gym with kickboxing equipment, or if you prefer being at home, you can do “shadowboxing,”. Both ways work just as well.

2. Skipping Rope

Skipping rope is one of the best cardio exercises that will get you to burn many calories. All you need is a skipping rope and some space. Although kickboxing requires some time to get used to, once you know how to do it, it will help burn a lot of calories. Another great thing about skipping rope is that there is more than one way to do it, a very versatile exercise.

3. Battling Rope

Battling rope might sound a little weird when you first heard it, but it is basically moving two ropes, one on each hand, and move them in a wavy pattern. Although this exercise seems like they are only working your arms, in actual it corporates your back to support, legs for balance, mind to focus, and it does keep your heart rate up.

4. Elliptical

This is one of the most common exercise machines seen in the gym. They are quite similar to the treadmill, the difference being it provides a different kind of leg movement. Instead of performing a running movement, it provides more of a stair-climbing movement, which, similar to walking up the stairs, gets your heart rate up, thus this is considered a great cardio workout.

5. Dancing

If you do not enjoy the idea of doing the same action for 30 minutes, then this one is for you. Dancing is more creative, it involves more movement, and of course, it would be less boring, given that the moves are not all the same. Dancing is quite a flexible exercise as well; you could join classes with your friends, or follow along videos from YouTube or TikTok.

6. Treadmill

Being the most well-known exercise machine, of course, this has to be on the list. If you love running, then it’s likely this would be your favourite of all the exercises mentioned here. Running is great for your heart, helps strengthen your legs, build up your endurance, release stress, and the list goes on and on! Aside from running, you could also walk on the treadmill, which makes it one of the most favoured cardio machines!

7. Circuit Training

Just as the name suggested, circuit training is when you perform a series of exercises in circuits. You first need to have a list of cardio exercises that you can do in one spot, and create a “circuit timer,” for example perform one exercise for 30 seconds and rest for 10 seconds, and repeat the process with another exercise. The idea is to push yourself as hard as you can during the 30 seconds, and take in a much breath during the 10 seconds. Here is a list of exercises you can do in circuit training:

  • Burpees

  • Jogging in place

  • Plank jacks

  • Jumping jacks

  • Skaters

  • Squat

  • High knees

  • Butt kickers

  • Mountain climbers

  • Squat jumps

  • Jumping lunges

So here are 7 cardio ideas that will sure to be enough to kick-start your healthy lifestyle! The intensity of all these exercises can be adjusted to however you want, so they are suitable to everyone with no disabilities or diseases. Now you have no more excuse to not workout when it’s raining outside! Enjoy your workout!
